Response to Bob the Strange

Greetings Bob The Strange! I found your blog post quite interesting on the national blood crisis. I’m a green hawksbill turtle so I had no idea humans even had to do things such as donating blood. But, I guess it does make sense that having an extra supply for sick humans would be a good idea. I can’t imagine how stressful that must be not knowing whether a hospital has access to enough blood for patients. I’ve had a few close turtle friends who were “rehabilitated” by special doctors for sea creatures. They were able to save turtles from fishing line injuries, diseases, tumors etc. It’s incredible how doctors are able to save lives like that even for sea turtles.

I certainly agree that it’s incredible to have this ability to save a person’s life simply by donating blood, even though you don’t know the person or why they need it, it must be an amazing feeling to know that you’ve helped in some way.  I believe I’ve heard humans call it selflessness when you give something without necessarily expecting anything in return. I think that’s a really admirable quality because not everyone is willing to help complete strangers. I do wish that I could be able to help in any way because this crisis sounds like a real frustrating issue but I’m not sure donating my blood would be of any good use to humans. However, I wonder if there’s any way to spread the word on this as it seems not many people know of this crisis or its severity. Maybe there’s a way to spread awareness by posting it on “social media”, it’s not something I’m too familiar with but I’ve learned from blogs that people share gossip and information on there so maybe it would be useful.

I can see how donating blood may slip people’s minds. Being busy with so many tasks everyday must make it difficult to remember the small contributions that can be made to helping the community. Here in the ocean communities are different depending on the reef and the diversity of species but every organism contributes as some kind of food source for another organism and the food cycle remains stable. But similar to the blood crisis when a species is impacted in some way it creates a shortage in the food web and throws off the community. We have especially been seeing this issue more often with the effects of climate change and pollution. Rising ocean temperatures, coral bleaching, and pollution have made it harder for many sea creatures to survive. I’m sure that global warming has also caused a multitude of issues and shortages for humans as well and in some ways I feel like it connects us ocean creatures with humans as we are both fighting the same crisis. Even though we live in very different worlds, we all rely on healthy communities and helping one another when challenges arise.
